Chief Adjudicator welcomes appointment of Independent Special Advisor

Dan Shapiro, Chief Adjudicator of the Independent Assessment Process (IAP), welcomes the appointment of an Independent Special Advisor to review complaints against lawyers and others who represent claimants in the IAP.

The Honourable Madam Justice B. J. Brown, of the Supreme Court of British Columbia, an Administrative and Supervising Judge under the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, appointed the Honourable Ian Pitfield, a former judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia, as Independent Special Advisor on June 30, 2014.

“Mr. Pitfield’s vast experience on the bench, and his recent work as the transition coordinator overseeing the appointment of new counsel for former clients of David Blott, make him the ideal candidate to protect and promote the integrity of the Independent Assessment Process,” said Mr. Shapiro.

Mr. Pitfield will act as Independent Special Advisor to the Court Monitor of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. He will review complaints brought to him by the Chief Adjudicator or the Court Monitor and determine appropriate next steps.
