Possible Interruption of Mail Service
October 22, 2018
In case of a full labour disruption, the Indian Residential Schools Adjudication Secretariat (IRSAS or the Secretariat) has made arrangements so that hearings under the Independent Assessment Process can continue and claimants and suppliers who depend on the mail system receive payment in a timely manner.
Documents that are required for hearings by claimant counsel, defendants and adjudicators are available through the Secretariat’s Electronic Document Interchange (EDI). Documents required by self-represented claimants will be delivered via courier (Purolator).
Claimants who require travel advances in order to attend a hearing should contact their lawyer or Claimant Support Officer. Cheques will be sent out via courier or will be available for pick-up, depending on the location. Please note that couriers cannot deliver to P.O. boxes or “general delivery” addresses.
Claimants who are seeking reimbursements for their hearing expenses should NOT mail their claims to the Secretariat, during a full disruption in mail services. Please send them via courier (Purolator, FedEx, UPS), or wait until after the mail interruption is over before submitting them. Send your claim to 900-2010 12th Ave, Regina SK S4P 0M3. Please consult with your lawyer or Claimant Support Officer if you have questions.
In the event of a full labour disruption, the Secretariat will not mail out cheques for expense claims. If the labour disruption is lengthy, alternate arrangements will be made to ensure that expense claims are reimbursed. Please note that some payments that were in the system for processing may already have been mailed. If you are expecting a cheque, and have not received it within 3-4 weeks of a full disruption, please contact your lawyer, your Claimant Support Officer or the IRSAS representative for your contract/supply arrangement.
Similar arrangements are being put in place for suppliers who receive payment through the mail. Suppliers who are concerned about receiving payment on time are invited to contact the IRSAS representative for their contract/supply arrangement. Suppliers are encouraged to sign up for direct deposit of payments to their bank account.
IAP compensation cheques are issued by Canada, not the Secretariat. For further information, please call 1-877-307-9089.
If you have any questions, please call the IAP Info-Line at 1-877-635-2648.
